  3. Medical center employs RFID-based access control system to track staff training

An US-based medical center has decided to implement an advanced RFID-based access control and tracking system in order to monitor staff training.

Saint Francis Medical Center holds 100 montly training sessions for its employees, meaning that every one of the facility’s 2,500 staff members attends some kind of training, which is provided in the hospital campus’ classrooms on a regular basis. Consequently, the medical center has a large volume of attendance records that it must collect and manage.

In the past, the hospital tracked session attendance manually, via paper and pen. This required that personnel write their own ID numbers onto a piece of paper and initial the page, in order to prove they attended. Others then had to input the IDs into the hospital’s Learning Management software for each session. This could create errors if workers forgot to write on the paper, or if the ID numbers were transposed or illegible.

For this reason, the organization decided to implement an advanced event attendance-tracking solution. Now, every hospital employee has a low-frequency (LF) 125 kHz RFID-enabled proximity badge encoded with a unique ID number assigned to that particular staff member in the company’s software.

The badges are used successfully both for access control and attendance checking, thus making sure that each employee has undergone the necessary training.

A secure and reliable access control system is a must for any scientific research laboratory, especially those that double as educational facilities.

This is also the case with the Science and Health Building that is currently being built for Coventry University, as reported by a media source.

The £37 million contract will bring together the Faculty of Health and Life Science’s teaching and research facilities into a ‘superlab’ – a five-storey, 120,000 sq ft building on Much Park Street in Coventry’s city centre.

BAM Construction has managed to secure the contract for building this impressive facility, which is due for completion in 2017.

The building will house world-class teaching and simulation facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories. A mock operating theatre, fully-equipped ambulance and a community house to test the latest assistive living technologies will be among the health simulation features.

A purpose-built laboratory for teaching and research in biological and analytic sciences will sit alongside a strength and conditioning room. A running track, sports therapy clinic and facilities for food and environmental sciences will also be part of the complex.

Considering the specific nature and the future use of the building, the implementation of a solid and reliable Access Control system on the premises is certainly a must.

  5. ONVIF to launch proactive education and enforcement campaign

ONVIF, the leading global standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, has announced that it is launching a proactive education and enforcement campaign designed to ensure that all claims of ONVIF conformance by manufacturers of IP-based physical security products are valid.

The education and enforcement initiative aims to help further educate the manufacturing community about the specific requirements of compliance and their ability to advertise individual products as ONVIF conformant.

“We recognise that the credibility of the ONVIF brand is crucial to the success of the standard and the organization going forward, therefore we take the protection of this brand very seriously,” said Per Björkdahl, Chairman, ONVIF Steering Committee. “Our objective with this enforcement campaign is to reinforce to the market that the ONVIF name continues to represent interoperability to the market.”

To augment these efforts, earlier this year ONVIF introduced a new level of membership to provide access to the ONVIF test tool, which is used to test the validity of product conformance. This Observer membership level allows consultants, systems integrators and media organizations to individually validate the conformance of a specific product to a particular ONVIF Profile.

  7. Access Control records strong growth over 2014, poised for further rise

The Access Control segment has surpassed video surveillance in terms of growth rate over the course of 2014 and it’s poised to continue this very positive trend over the next 5 years, new research by Memoori was able to reveal.

The physical security industry in the first half of 2014 has well outperformed what most stakeholders had forecast. Despite setbacks in economic fortunes in the developed world, the business has grown by 40 percent from its decline in 2009.

In the last 12 months, it has grown by 7.5 percent and we expect this to continue for the rest of the year, the research paper found.

This steady consistent growth since 2011 has been driven by a combination of factors including strong growth in IP video networking and IP access control products. Unfortunately, security is still regarded by most end users as a cost center and as such has been slightly overlooked in terms of capital investments.

Nevertheless, a gradual change in attitude is taking place, with buyers realizing that enhanced security can be a cost saver when reducing shrinkage (retail) and, that when integrated with other services, it can increase productivity in the business enterprise and therefore reduce operational costs.

This has been made possible through IP convergence and the market has been quite quick to see the opportunities and changing requirements for more converged and integrated solutions.

In order for companies to deliver such systems many have decided that it is necessary to acquire, merge or form alliances and partnerships with other suppliers. In order to maximize the opportunities of delivering on ROI, it is vital for suppliers to have specialist knowledge and experience in vertical markets.

  8. RFID-based Access Control and Tracking Systems can help Protect Students

RFID-based Access Control and Tracking Systems can help keep tabs on students’ whereabouts at all times, ensuring a superior level of security within educational environments.

One example of a successful RFID implementation comes from a Peru, IN, school, that has taken the necessary steps to implement such a program by issuing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards to its students.

According to school officials, they were receiving at least one call a week from a concerned parent communicating that their child had not gotten off at their bus stop. But according to Peru Community Schools Transportation Director Dave Frushour: “This will save everyone time and give parents peace of mind to know that we know where their child is.”

The student swipes a card when they get on or off the bus. This, in turn, allows the school district to track the student’s whereabouts, as far as what bus they are on. The ID card also has the bus number and stop stamped on it to help make sure they board the correct bus and exit at the correct stop.

Furthermore, the card reader gives school officials access to information such as who rides regularly and how many empty seats are on any particular bus. Frushour stresses that no personal information is stored on the cards or readers.

  9. Carillion to provide facilities management services in public sector prisons

UK services group Carillion has been appointed preferred bidder to provide facilities management services in public sector prisons, a recent news report was able to reveal.
The contracts cover approximately 50 prisons and will be for an initial five-year period, with the potential for two subsequent one-year extensions.
Carillion will provide a wide range of hard and soft facilities management services, including mechanical and electrical engineering maintenance, building fabric maintenance, energy and environmental services, waste management, escort services for contractors, cleaning services and minor building works.
Mobilisation is scheduled to begin in 2015, while the contract is due to begin 1 June 2015. The combined revenue from these two contracts is expected to be between £35m and £40m per year.

Managing the contractors’ access to the secure prison site can be a potentially troublesome issue, but this is specifically where the Visitor Monitoring Systems and access control systems from Access Control UK could really be put through their paces.

The access control systems can operate up to 31 clocking stations, each of which can have up to twelve scanner controllers attached to it – in effect, the system can control access to 372 different areas of your site. Door access can be limited by the access control software, which controls the access profile of each employee or visitor who is enrolled on the system via their fire roll call status.

Both smart card and biometric access control scanners can be combined on the same network, giving you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of day. Sensitive or dangerous areas can easily be denied to those who do not have the appropriate security clearance.

Your access control system is completely bespoke and can be used to control most standard types of internal and external electro-magnetic door releases. In addition, your system can also control access control turnstiles, barriers and bollards.
