  1. Three new schools are set to be built in Liverpool

A total of three new schools will be built across Liverpool as part of Mayor Joe Anderson’s Schools Investment Programme, a news report in the local media has revealed.

A report to the Cabinet on Friday 16th May is recommending that new homes for Northway Primary School in Childwall and New Park Primary School in Kensington are built by Morgan Sindall at a cost of £5.5 million per school, and Willmott Dixon constructs Archbishop Blanch Church of England High School for £17.5 million.

Both primary schools have reached the end of their natural life and are deemed to be unsuited to modern teaching methods, with classrooms that are undersized and insufficient quality space for teaching.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson commented: "This is a much-needed investment in three schools which desperately need it and is part of my commitment to deliver at least 12 new schools for pupils in the city.

"The new buildings for will be a tremendous boost for thousands of present and future generations of school children and ensure they get the most out of their learning.

"We are working with construction firms to make sure as much of the money is spent locally as possible and benefits the workforce in the city."

Given the future public use of this new building, implementing a very solid and reliable access control system is a must, especially for those specific areas where access should be restricted (teachers-only areas, etc.).

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies in order to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

A new library and customer service centre has opened in east London as part of a redevelopment scheme implemented by Newham Council, a media news source could reveal.

BAM Construction was in charge of the building works, and teamed up with architects Rick Mather to create the three-storey campus.

A second phase of the East Ham Civic Campus scheme will include refurbishing Grade 2* listed buildings including East Ham Town Hall, while a disused technical college will also be refurbished and turned into a 6th Form College.

Construction director Andy Mason said: "BAM is delighted to have completed this landmark building for Newham Council. A great deal of work was required from all parties to make this scheme happen.

"We have not let up on site, however, and are busy creating more excellent facilities for council staff and local residents."

Given the future public use of this new building, implementing a very solid and reliable access control system is a must, especially for those specific areas where access should be restricted.

A company driving forward the development of a £150m green energy power plant in Hull has selected a joint venture partnership to design, build and operate the facility, a news report in the local business media has recently revealed.

The joint venture comprises MWH Treatment, part of the giant US-based MWH Global, and leading engineering specialist Spencer Group.

The first phase of the development will be an innovative energy recovery facility that will generate 28MW of electricity by an advanced gasification process and will provide sufficient electricity to power 43,000 homes, by processing materials which would otherwise be sent to landfill, while also reducing dependency upon imported fossil fuels.

Phase two of the scheme will see the later addition of an Anaerobic Digestion plant and materials processing facilities. The development will provide a major stimulus for the local economy, creating more than 200 jobs during the construction phase, and 40 permanent positions once Energy Works is operational.

Energy Works Project Director Phil Morland said: "We are pleased to announce the joint venture of MWH Treatment and Spencer Group as our preferred bidder. The two companies are a good fit, with complementary capabilities, and offer the ideal partnership to deliver this ground-breaking project.”

Once its completed, a project of this size and scope will certainly require the implementation of a very solid and reliable access control and visitor management solution, and this is specifically where Access Control UK could really put its experience to very good use.

  4. Organizations are moving away from passwords, adopting smart cards

More and more organizations of any size and scope are moving away from simple password-protected systems and opting for smart card-based, more advanced solutions, industry leaders in this segment believe.

Smart card based systems tend to be more secure because an intruder would need to not only have the smart card, but the unique pin number that matches with that particular card. If and when an employee loses a smart card, the badge is deleted and disabled and the certificates will not come off the card, a representative for Gemalto revealed, as quoted by a news report on this matter.

On the other hand, although more secure, a smart-card based system poses other challenges. This type of access control system also includes a behavioral component that must be implemented effectively in order for it to work properly. The individual does have to keep track of the card. They must remove the card from the computer and have it with them at all times in order to enter and exit the facility and use certain equipment.

A new £6m food waste recycling plant in Llwyn Isaf, near Caernarfon, Wales, has just been opened by the country’s first minister, a news report in the local media can reveal.

Built by Biogen, a leading anaerobic digestion specialist, Prosiect GwyriAD is Wales’ first purpose built anaerobic digestion facility treating food waste collected by local authorities and generating renewable electricity.

Tthe plant will process food waste collected from local homes and businesses by the council, diverting it from landfill to produce renewable energy and valuable biofertiliser for local farmland.

The First Minister said: "Prosiect GwyriAD demonstrates what can be achieved by the Welsh Government working closely with the local council and the project team. Wales is the only country in the UK with a national programme to address household food waste, and we have provided leadership to local government and the market with our ambitions, as well as significant funding.

"Thanks to Prosiect GwyriAD, 11,000 tonnes of waste a year will avoid landfill, where it would generate greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the plant has created jobs locally and generates 3,500 megawatt hours of renewable electricity for the national grid – enough to power every home in nearby Penygroes continually for a year."

Given the specific nature of the activity set to be carried out on the site’s premises, it would certainly require the implementation of a very solid and reliable access control solution.

  10. New HID Global survey provides insights into firms’ attitude towards access control

HID Global, once of the most important global players in the field of access control, has recently published a very insightful study that tackles various organizations’ perceptions about change and the importance of industry best practices, and how well today’s technology and policy best practices are being implemented.

The survey managed to obtain relevant information regarding just how well organizations can defend against increasingly dangerous and costly security threats, both now and in the future.

Unfortunately, statistical figures reveal that just around 37 percent of the total of 600 respondents carry out annual security assessments, and most users do not contract a third party to test their existing PACS. Furthermore, in excess of 50% of respondents have not upgraded in the last year, and more than 20 percent haven’t upgraded in the last three years.

Furthermore, 75 percent of end-users said cards with cryptography were important and the majority also believes that magstripe and proximity technologies provide adequate security, despite their vulnerability to cloning.

Data obtained from the survey also suggests that 75 percent of respondents state that the highest-security technologies were important or very important, but half said they weren’t implementing them well, or at all.

Plus, over 90 percent felt the most secure policies were important or very important, with only 70 percent felt they were implementing them effectively or very effectively.

Biggest barriers to best-practice implementation were budget-related, and management not seeing value in the investment.
