  5. Updating one’s Access Control System Causes Little Disruption, Security Industry Believes

Although upgrading a company’s access control system might seem a daunting task that’s likely to bring about significant disruptions to daily operations, the consensus across the security industry is that such a process is either ‘somewhat disruptive’ or brings ‘very little disruption’, a recent report has been able to suggest.

The “Access Control Report 2016: Legacy Infrastructure and Motivations for Upgrading” IFSEC Global survey, published in partnership with HID Global, explains how opinions were mixed as to whether upgrading their access-control solution would be disruptive to daily business or not, with a majority anticipating that it would be ‘somewhat disruptive’, 31% saying there would be ‘very little disruption’ (31%) and just 16% opting for ‘very disruptive’.

One respondent said they had found upgrading “somewhat disruptive to business activities” but indicated that it was worth the short-term inconvenience as it boosted “efficiency”.

“Access control upgrades can be managed with minimal disruption if a phased approach is considered and installation times are scheduled when a site is used less.”, the report’s authors believe.

“ In addition, multi-technology readers and cards can make the upgrade path easy and non-disruptive for a business. On-site administrator training is required to operate the new head-end software (in case this part of the system is upgraded)” they added.

  6. IHS alters growth forecasts for EMEA access control market

Market researchers at IHS have recently revised their growth forecasts for the EMEA access control market, according to a news report.

According to market researchers at IHS, the combined compound annual growth rate (CAGR) forecast for 2014 through 2019 in Germany, Russia, United Kingdom and France changed only slightly from 5.3 percent to 5.4 percent. The biggest changes in the forecast came from France and Russia. In fact, France’s CAGR forecast between 2015 and 2019 rose from 3.9 percent to 5.0 percent, while Russia’s CAGR during the same period fell from 2.6 percent to 0.3 percent.

The French market will continue to be a target market for international suppliers through 2019, especially for electronic locks. Due to the recent terrorist activity in France, securing access to public places and accenting citizen safety in that country has become a priority. Development of governmental systems for access control is likely to receive backing from both the public and the parliament, however, but growth in the government sector will take time to develop.

On the other hand, the Russian market will prove to be particularly challenging for external suppliers due to worsening economic conditions and competition from local and Chinese suppliers. The market contracted by 5.3 percent in 2015 and will shrink by another 1.9 percent in 2016.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies, including here RFID, to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

  7. Employers in the construction segment urged to check CSCS cards electronically

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) have revoked 4,615 cards, following investigations into fraudulent activity at five test centres, the CSCS has just revealed.

CSCS is committed to safety and works with CITB, the British Safety Council and others to verify that individuals have achieved the required qualifications before a CSCS card is issued.

CSCS wrote to all affected card holders in November to tell them that they needed to retake their HS&E test. Vouchers were provided to pay for retesting and steps were taken to reduce inconvenience for businesses.

Following analysis of how the test was answered, using known testing patterns and geographical factors, over 6,000 candidates who had completed the Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test and more than 2,000 people who had completed the Site Safety Plus certificate were required to retake their test. This was to eliminate any doubt.

Graham Wren, Chief Executive at CSCS, said: “We take assurance that CITB’s in-depth analysis was accurate. While we accept that some people have been inconvenienced we have kept this to a minimum and removed unsafe cards from circulation.”

“We are urging employers to check the validity of all cards by either electronically reading the CSCS SmartCard or by using “Card Checker” via the CSCS website, to make sure that invalid cards are not permitted on site.”

Access Control UK– the partner of choice for Construction / Building Site Access Control

Professionals who hold a CSCS card can use their existing card to gain access to a construction site or similar, including through turnstiles or car park barriers. The WinAC.NET software includes a CSCS card wizard that allows system users to quickly grant contractors access to their access control system.

Other advanced features that can be enabled include a separate verification process where CSCS smartcard holders must report to a Site Manager for the Site Manager to verify the Contractor’s details before permitting the CSCS smartcard to enter a site. This can be conducted on a site-by-site basis or can be applied to permit usage of a CSCS smartcard across a number of sites.

The CSCS smartcard provides a very powerful and cost effective means of centralising Time & Attendance, Advanced Access Control and Fire/Evacuation roll-call, re-using an existing CSCS smartcard as base for the entire system.

If you’d like to find out more about the integration of Access Control Systems with CSCS cards, just contacts us or Book a Demo, our representatives will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and queries.

Implementing a modern, fully integrated access control system is really a must for any modern research facility, such as the future £25 million science centre that is set to be built at Anglia Ruskin University’s Cambridge Campus.

The new 7,900 sq m facility to be built by Morgan Sindall will combine teaching, postgraduate and staff amenities for various departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Features include a 300-seat lecture theatre, a 200-seat super-laboratory, staff offices and a range of specialist teaching space.

The red brick building will replace the Bryant and Mellish Clark buildings, with the roof designed to be reminiscent of traditional sheet metal roof cladding and will aim to achieve a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating, with 200 sq m of the roof space dedicated to photovoltaic panels.

The centre will save the university over 30% of carbon emissions by using gas more efficiently and generating its own electricity.

The venue will be located on the site behind Princes Quay shopping centre, with construction set to start in 2016. It will include a 3,500-capacity concert auditorium with flexible facilities to reduce to a 2,500 all-seated event with a 2,000m2 exhibition space.

A revised planning application will be submitted to the council’s Planning Committee on 21 December which will address concerns raised by the committee earlier this week, when its members refused an initial application.

Jason Pink, Construction Director for BAM, said: “BAM’s track record in the city of Hull has been outstanding and our appointment to build this prestigious arena is a testimony to years of successful work in many sectors here.”
