  1. Contactless Biometrics – A Top 2021 Trend in Access Control

Following the changes to the overall landscape of the security industry brought about the COVID-19 pandemic, it should come as no surprise that contactless biometric solutions capable of potentially reducing the spread of the virus in workplaces will represent a top trend in 2021, experts in this sector have been able to reveal.

As the demand for touchless access control solutions increases, facial recognition is quickly growing in popularity. Millions of users already use Face ID on their smartphones, and this trend is spreading to other sectors of the security industry.

Like using mobile credentials for access control, facial recognition and other biometric characteristics are more secure than legacy access control systems. Moreover, COVID-19 has reinforced the need for touchless technology to eliminate common touch surfaces that can spread disease. Facial recognition access control meets that need and does so in a secure fashion.

Multi-Factor Authentication will represent yet another very important trend in 2021. As security threats have increased, so has the need for a more secure method to authenticate users. Multi-factor authentication requires the authorization of more than one credential to gain access. For instance, an employee may be required to use their mobile credentials as well as key in a pin before they are allowed to access a facility.

Other credentials that can be combined include video intercom, fingerprint ID, mobile credentials, SMS text or email pin. Multi-factor authentication has been taking root over the last few years, and is expected to become even more common in 2021 and beyond. This technology was traditionally required in critical infrastructure and utility industries such as oil, gas, and power plants. However, the emergency of multi-purpose access control readers that support several credentials at once has made multi-factor authentication accessible to every industry.

Access control systems that employ facial recognition technologies for authentication will become increasingly popular on the future, security and technology experts believe.

While access control cards have been in use for decades, they are increasingly becoming inadequate for the evolving security landscape. One progressive technology that is filling this gap is biometrics-based access control, with facial recognition access being among the top emerging technologies in this sector.

Facial recognition uses data such as 3D shape, skin texture analysis, vascular and heat pattern to uniquely identify users. The system maps out facial features by analyzing unique characteristics such as shape, size, or relative position of the eyes, jaw, and cheekbones. The resulting data is then converted into a template and compared with a database of known faces to find a match. In access control applications, only matched users will be granted access into the building. Security alerts can be triggered when users who are not authorized attempt to gain access to your facility.

Advances in technology have seen facial recognition take off in the past few years. The facial recognition global market is expected to generate $7 billion in revenue by 2024, a 16.6 percent CAGR from 2019 to 2024. These numbers point to a dominant trend that puts facial recognition at the centre of the future of access control.

Furthermore, the reality on the ground reflects this trend. Mobile face recognition is used to secure hundreds of millions of smartphones around the world. Cloud-based access control is helping secure buildings across the country, from high-rise apartments to commercial property and industrial facilities. Enterprise providers are finding approaches to balance security with privacy.

  8. Modern access control technologies are on the books for the higher education sector, research finds

Modern access control solutions that integrate with building management systems and surveillance are becoming increasingly popular within the higher education sector, recent research has been able to suggest.

The survey of 1,800 IT and education professionals highlights that 33.76% of readers, 30.6% of controllers and 24% of software programs are more than six years old. Older technologies such as barcode, magnetic stripe and 125 kHz low-frequency proximity solutions continue to dominate physical access control systems in the higher education sector.

In fact, more than half of survey respondents still use magnetic stripe, while almost a quarter still use 125 kHz prox. 64% of survey respondents observed that their current access control system experiences malfunctions.

However, more than a third of survey respondents (35%) are ready to embrace more modern technology as a way of improving the experience for staff, students and administrators. Over half of respondents (54.2%) would be interested in using their access control credentials to support multiple applications beyond physical access, and 44% stated that better integration with other security systems/components is a key driver for upgrading their access control systems.

Most colleges and universities want their students to use a single card or mobile credentials for multiple types of applications from accessing rooms in Halls of Residence and checking out books from the library through to locking bicycles and paying for food, parking and more. However, 64% of survey participants said that, while they want to upgrade their systems, they view costs as an obstacle. This often leads institutions to migrate towards systems that fulfil minimum requirements because of cost, rather than seeking the features and integration capabilities they really want.

  9. Access Control Systems – More than Just Security Solutions

While most traditional access control systems are designed specifically to ensure security at the door (i.e. allow only authorized persons to access the building in a fast and streamlined manner), the truth of the matter is that, in the “new normal”, these systems now need to protect residents from unnecessary hazards or risks.

And while it is nearly impossible to make every part of our built world entirely remotely controlled, it is possible to easily eliminate the need for almost all in-person interactions by implementing technology to provide a more seamless version of access control.

Streamlining access control to help eliminate unnecessary risks is achievable in a number of ways, one of the most important ones being to make doors and locks smart enough to grant seamless access control has a lot of other important benefits as well.

Granting access for things like delivery drivers and dog walkers can be a full time job in large complexes. A lot of time can be saved by adopting smart software that can help manage the entire process. This time can be spent doing the things that really make a building feel like a home like attending to the residents.

Trusted vendors can be granted access remotely, allowing the building and its residents to go about their daily business with fewer interruptions and unnecessary interactions, which is something especially important right now.

Controlling vendor access is an important part of making a building secure, but it is true now more than ever. Being able to control access to the building can not only help mitigate exposure, but it also frees up time for sales agents because they no longer need to assist visitors or waste time organizing vendor keys and adding resident credentials.

As workplaces around the world start to reopen, many businesses and organizations are starting to reconsider their workforce management provisions and the technologies they require in order to maximize their operational efficiency, multiple experts believe.

Many businesses and organizations already have the technology foundations they need in place – primarily in the form of access control systems. Once deployed purely for its security benefits, access control has been taking on a whole new role as a business tool for workforce management – even prior to the pandemic – now with a heightened interest focused on touchless access solutions.

By using employing touchless credentials such as biometrics, proximity devices, or mobile credentialing, existing and new access control systems can easily be enhanced to provide a fast and efficient means of allowing authorized individuals hands-free entry and exit to a facility helping prevent the spread of contagions that can impact the health of both individuals and businesses.

Furthermore, access control systems can also integrate new thermal detection solutions to instantly identify the surface temperature of individuals. This can provide fast initial indication of an identified individual’s well-being for further investigation by designated personnel or to trigger some other action, such as denying physical access.

Although not perfected yet, access control systems with thermal sensors or cameras provide a new first line of defence that transcends the primary security benefits these systems were initially implemented to provide.

Beyond these new health safety benefits, access control alleviates many of the longstanding challenges associated with workplace efficiency as it relates to employee scheduling, time tracking, leave management, payroll and staffing audits by providing vital metrics for labor intensive operations at locations like factories, distribution centers, food processing plants and construction sites.
